Hosts can be put into different modes by humans or other hosts that are authorised to do so. The current Mode of a Host can be changed using a computer or tablet or, more typically, by using Voice Commands.
The modes in which hosts are known to operate are:
- Analysis Mode, also called Diagnostic Mode - A state in which hosts are "out of character". In this mode they can answer questions and perform actions when told to - but are passive and do not initiate conversations or actions.
- Character Mode - The state in which a host is behaving and reacting to their surroundings in the ways dictated or suggested by their current narrative.
- Sleep or Offline Mode - When the Host is in a form of stasis or 'sleep'.
